Milton (Fred)'s Story
Married Jr.high sweetheart & attended college on an Athletic scholarship. Coaching/Teaching career started in Florida & resigning from Alvin HS in 1980 with 3 boys. Spent 10 years in the oil field & 2 years marketing health, life and investments. Returned as Teacher/Coach in Houston, Texas while living in Pearland with the loss of a 26 year marriage.
Attended St.Elizabeth Catholic School from 1st thru 7th grade filled with many good, funny, & not so funny memories. I invited Carl Bedgood, and Richard King for a sleep over during the summer of our 4th grade year. Playing all day, listening to music, telling jokes, having cookies & milk, and being told to be quiet and go to sleep all seemed with in the normal sleep over until we decided we would go bike riding after mom fell asleep.
Sneaking out was normal, exciting, thrilling with no harm done as long as we got back in the house before Mom woke up. It was a scary & thrilling lesson I will not forget. It was well after midnight when we first started riding our bicycles without lights up & down the streets avioding car lights. We decided riding to Alice Hospital Emergency room would be fun because funny books were on the table. We rode around the HEB's grocery store since it was on the way to the hospital but we would soon be accused of stealing coke bottles. Upon arriving at the hospital we walked into the empty waiting room and began looking at the funnies when a nurse asked where our parents were. Before we could leave Oscar Lopez arrived took our names, phone numbers, & told us to follow his car back to the police s...Expand for more
tation to call our parents. Once at the station the police said "we have reports that boys are stealing coke bottles from the HEB's outside storage bin and selling the bottles back to HEB". "You boys know anything about that"? We replied in unison, NO sir! You boys are lying and will be questioned one at a time. Carl was first. He came out crying and it was my turn to be questioned. 1st question was did you stop at the HEB? Where did you hide the bottles? Your friend confessed why don't you? Fred, Do you know what we do to little boys who lie, we put them in one of those dark cells back there with the rats and snakes. If you have not stolen bottles before you know who has. Is it Richard? We have never stolen coke bottles and I promise I will never go bike riding this late without asking my mom. As I walked out from being questioned Carl was gone and Richard went in. My mom came. Carl was crying about the punishment he would receive and Richard said he confessed so they would not put him back in the dark cell with the rats and snakes.
My first job was at Elks Oilfield, where I got paid $10/day in the summer to sweep the warehouse, mow the grass, and throw a football to Larry Barnett to help improve our passing game.
Bill Z., stricken with Pol-lo as a teenager, was a great influence in my life. He taught kids that would listen to him and follow his instructions. Bill managed and coached professional boxers, painted portraits to raise money to purchase equipment providing a place for teenagers to workout. Alice greatly benefited and recognized his accomplishment...etc
